LEADERSHIP COMPETENCIES – IQ AND EQ

More reflections: I had a week full of meets that each ended up in having a group or personal coaching session in some shape or form. A fairly common thread emerged so thought worth sharing something I found in my archives.

There are 8 core leadership competencies – 2 IQ and 6 EQ.

Leaders tomorrow will succeed with a different skill set than that of today’s best. Smart leaders will spot the mid-career folks with the greatest potential to become outstanding future executives. Wise organisations will make this a high-priority mission.

But what will tomorrow’s leadership take?
  • Openness and curiosity;
  • Recognition of new possibilities;
  • Persuasion and
  • An unstoppable drive.

But those are not enough. While leaders tomorrow will need these capacities to adapt to a turbulent world, the fundamentals of leadership will not change.

The reason….leadership relies on mobilising human skills.

Always has.  Always will.

The distinguishing competencies – the ones that set star leaders apart from mediocre – are:

  1. Strategic Orientation – being able to think analytically and come up with a strategy. IQ
  2. Market insight – understanding the market and the business. IQ
  3. Results Orientation – the drive to achieve results through constant improvement as assessed by sound metrics. EQ
  4. Customer Impact – passion for pleasing customers and clients. EQ
  5. Collaboration and influence – working well with others, including influencing those not in one’s line of command. EQ
  6. Organisational Development – developing strengths for the company by recruiting, retaining, and developing future leaders. EQ
  7. Team Leadership – Building winning groups. EQ
  8. Transformation Leadership – leading the way toward new goals. EQ

The last six of these competencies fall into the emotional intelligence category. Without the basics of self-mastery and relationship skills, a leader will flounder at them.

Out of 10, how did you score for each?
And how did you score your key team members?

Be motivated by the fear of being average. If you aren’t happy with the result, reach out, and let’s help.
