THE AXE FORGETS, THE TREE REMEMBERS

Ever heard of the saying…“The axe forgets, the tree remembers.”?

In short…

It’s a lesson in mindfulness, and I thought it worth sharing. Recently I was the tree…and I learned years ago how not to be an axe, and try every day, not to be one.

The axe represents those who inflict harm

Often unaware or quick to forget their deeds, while the tree carries the memory of every cut. Your words and your actions, even unintentional ones, will leave lasting marks on others. Sticks and stones stuff…

As a leader, whether dealing with team members, customers, or service providers, your actions may seem small to you, but their impact can leave deep impressions. A harsh word, an unfair decision, a broken promise, or neglecting a commitment might fade from your mind, but it could linger with others like a scar on a tree.

I recommend…
  • Lead with empathy.
  • Honour your commitments.
  • Communicate with respect.
  • Be consistent in your words and actions.
  • Listen actively to understand, not just to reply.
  • Acknowledge and apologise when mistakes are made.
  • Celebrate others’ contributions and successes.

Whether it’s giving feedback to a team member, negotiating with a supplier, or resolving a customer complaint, remember…how you make people feel will outlast the transaction or task.

And…If you’re going to be an axe, make sure you’re also a tree – strong, grounded, and mindful of the impact you leave behind.

Leave folk feeling valued, not wounded.
