RED TEAM VS BLUE TEAM

There have been a lot of posts around Richard Mulholland’s book launch at the Suits & Sneakers event last week, with some incredible shares.

My takeaway? A little left of centre as usual.

I was reminded of a forgotten term I knew, and it sent me down a bit of a rabbit hole of discovery.

RED 🟥 vs BLUE 🟦

For those unfamiliar, it’s a common tech term:

🟥 RED team are the attackers, always on the offensive.
🟦 BLUE team are the defenders, protecting the system.

As Rich put it: “Who always wins? RED team!

So why are you playing for the BLUE team?”

Netflix is the best example I’ve heard.

Once upon a time, they took on the DVD business (RED vs BLUE) and won. But now? With Prime, Disney, and Apple in the mix, they’re defending their space. They’ve become the BLUE guys.

But RED vs BLUE isn’t just about tech. It plays out everywhere.

  • When you’re building out your strategic objectives…RED teams challenge plans to expose risks. BLUE teams defend and refine strategies.
  • When you’re building a crisis management plan…RED teams create worst-case scenarios. BLUE teams build response plans.
  • When developing new products…RED teams stress-test ideas. BLUE teams improve resilience.

Get it?

So, think about your business. Your life. Are you playing to win, or trying not to lose? RED vs BLUE? I’m betting on RED.

If it’s time to get extra help to find your RED, our Fractional C-Suite offering could be exactly what’s needed to paint the town.
