A LETTER FROM THE FUTURE

Ever heard of “A letter from the future”?

In short… It is a creative exercise or storytelling technique where you imagine yourself or someone else writing a letter from a future point in time back to today. It can be used for:

Personal Visioning

Where you write as if you’re living in the future (e.g. 5 from now), and is common in coaching, goal-setting, or as a visualisation and motivation tool.

It should describe:
  • What your life looks like.
  • What goals you’ve achieved.
  • What challenges did you overcame.
  • Advice you would give your present-day self.

Strategic Foresight

Used in businesses or strategic goal-setting, and helps with planning, risk analysis, and innovation.

It’s used to:
  • Imagine a future scenario (positive or negative).
  • Explore how the world or industry evolved.
  • Reflect on decisions made in hindsight.
  • Consider the steps taken to get there.

So I gave it a bash today and reflected on my start to the year. Here’s my first attempt at just one of the few “types” one can write. Going to hash out a detailed one in the new week and expand for 2026 – 2030. Might even do a few for a couple of my fractional clients.

Hey GW,

It’s me and it’s 2030. You’d be proud. The long days, hard decisions, and relentless effort all mattered. So here’s what I wish you’d hold onto in 2025…

  • Keep going when no one is watching, because the late nights and early starts compound, and while it doesn’t feel like it at the time, consistency is your real superpower.
  • You’re not building a business, you’re building people, and this is an impact that lasts and isn’t found on the revenue line. It’s in the leaders you mentored, the courage you inspired, and the culture & values you chose to protect.
  • Continue to lead by sweeping the shed, as the moments where you stepped in, rolled up your sleeves, and led from the front, earned trust and built belief far beyond any strategy deck.
  • The world didn’t get easier; you just got clearer, and your vision helped you learn to tune out noise, lead with conviction, and keep excuses to a minimum.

And one last thing, you were never behind, even though you clapped for others. You were just getting ready.

Keep going yougotthis
GW

Give it a try…

I suddenly feel and realise that it’s all been worth it, and that there’s so much more to do and achieve.
Being intentionally relentlessly really works.
