HOW CAN A CHIEF OF STAFF OR CHIEF OPERATING OFFICER ADD VALUE

To all founders, CEOs and boards…

Over the years, I’ve shared insights to many on the role of a Chief of Staff (CoS, fCoS) as an alternate to having a Chief Operating Officer (COO, fCOO) in the passageways, and here’s a simplified take –

There are typically two types:
  1. Internal Hire: Often focused on day-to-day administration, supporting governance and reporting, and assisting with the managing of special projects, usually at the direction of the CEO or company board.
  2. External Professional: A mid-career executive with years of leadership experience at the C-Suite level. These individuals often take on strategic leadership roles and act on behalf of the EXCO or board in key discussions and decisions.

In my fractional work, I’ve stepped into both a fCoS-like as well as fCOO roles for several businesses and from experience, having an extra set of capable hands in the C-Suite delivers immense value and helps keep some cadence on accountabilities and executions.

If you’re unsure whether your business needs a COO or a CoS, here’s a simple litmus test: a CoS typically doesn’t have direct reports, unlike a COO or other “Chief” roles, which often do.

Still on the fence about committing to a full-time COO? A fractional Chief of Staff (fCoS) or fractional COO (fCOO) could be the perfect solution.
