IMPOSTER SYNDROME

Do you feel like you don’t belong? Aren’t good enough? Or don’t fit in your current role?

Well, there’s this thing called Imposter Syndrome…What is it, and why do so many of us experience it in different parts of our lives?

As I grow as a leader and work with other leaders in various hashtag#fractional roles, I have seen this show up as high stress, slow (or no) career progression, workplace anxiety, or just general self-doubt.

What is it really?

It’s the belief that you’re not as competent as others think you are. It’s not a clinical disorder…just a psychological phenomenon. And like most things, it can be managed if you know the signs and apply yourself a little.

In fractional leadership roles, where expectations can be high and support structures less defined, Imposter Syndrome can feel especially challenging.

Here are five common types:

1️⃣ The Expert

You feel like you should know everything and feel ashamed when you don’t.

Tip to apply: Embrace the mindset of continuous learning. No one knows everything…focus on learning and growing instead of feeling pressured to have all the answers.

2️⃣ The Soloist

You believe work must be done alone and refuse credit if you have any help.

Tip to apply: Recognise the value of teamwork. Delegating tasks doesn’t diminish your worth…it amplifies your capabilities.

3️⃣ The Natural Genius

You think everything should come easily…and if it doesn’t, you doubt your ability.

Tip to apply: Shift your focus from results to the process. Mastery comes from effort and persistence, not from immediate success.

4️⃣ The “Super” person

You expect yourself to excel in every role, no exceptions.

Tip to apply: Set realistic expectations. Understand that no one can excel in everything…and focus on what you do best and seek support where needed.

5️⃣ The Perfectionist

You set impossibly high standards and criticise yourself for not reaching them.

Tip to apply: Adjust your standards to be challenging, not impossible. Break down big tasks into achievable steps.

It’s tough in the moment, whether you’re a full-time leader or in a fractional role, with the right mindset, you can overcome it. Like most challenges in life, it just takes effort.

Do your part, life will meet you halfway.
