THE 5 STEPS TO GETTING STUFF DONE

I have spent many years refining a process that where applied the results were tangible, measurable, and delivered the results needed.

The 5-Steps are:

  1. What is the problem or the opportunity?
  2. Who is the person / the people going to deal with it?
  3. Remove the noise and the excuses that will prevent this from happening.
  4. Empower those responsible.
  5. Support and be available to guide where needed.

Here’s an example of how to apply these 5️⃣ steps.

Step
1️⃣ – You are battling as a business to have a handle on the many projects on the go. Evident through missed deadlines, poor cost analysis, lack of follow up, and cascading effect on other projects.

Step
2️⃣ – Now the mistake everyone makes, is trying to unpack what the issues are and brainstorm how it can be fixed. But this is Step 3…we forget to do Step 2.

This step is…First the people. The “who” in the process.

Step 3️⃣ – Once you have ascertained who the team or people are that will drive the fix or opportunity, only then should you begin tackling what the issues are, what resources are needed, and what “noise” is preventing a successful outcome.

Step 4️⃣ – You have to learn to empower your selected team for this. Micromanaging is not an option.

Step 5️⃣ – Is so obvious, but so many don’t do it. As a leader in the team you’ve now established where to focus and with whom, given them the tools, and the autonomy, and then you don’t support, check-in, guide, coach, or lead to success.

It’s 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 3️⃣ 4️⃣ 5️⃣

Not 1️⃣ 3️⃣ 4️⃣ 2️⃣ and no 5️⃣

Not 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 5️⃣ and no 3️⃣ 4️⃣

Not 1️⃣ 2️⃣ 5️⃣ 3️⃣ 4️⃣

Miss the order, feel the pain. Follow it and reap the reward.

Have an opportunity in mind? Or a problem? Apply the steps.
