THE GOLDFISH MINDSET

Ever heard of the saying…”Have a Goldfish mindset?”

In short…

The happiest animal on Earth might just be a Goldfish. Do you know why?

It’s got a short memory…just enough to acknowledge, adjust, and move forward, and is certainly nothing like an elephant that seems to remember far too much.

As leaders, we often carry the weight of past mistakes, unresolved conflicts, or missed opportunities. But sometimes, the best way to lead is to let go of what’s already behind us.

So, take some guidance from the Goldfish mindset:
  • Don’t let failure define you or your team. Analyse what went wrong, learn from it, and move on with purpose.
  • Criticism is a part of growth, but carrying every piece of feedback can be overwhelming. Take what’s constructive, apply it, and let the rest go.
  • The Goldfish mindset teaches us to focus on the present. Instead of dwelling on the past, give your full attention to what’s in front of you right now.
  • Every moment is an opportunity to start fresh. Yesterday’s setbacks don’t have to dictate today’s actions or outcomes.
  • Leadership doesn’t mean carrying every burden. Prioritise what truly matters, release the unnecessary, and create space for clarity.
  • Progress is worth celebrating, no matter how small. Goldfish don’t dwell on what’s unfinished—they move forward, building on each success.

What about you?

Are you carrying something today that’s keeping you stuck?

Goldfish. Small animal. Big lesson.
