THE SUPERHERO PARADOX

Ever heard of the Superhero Paradox?

In short… As leaders, we often feel the pressure to swoop in, solve every problem, and save the day. But while being the hero can feel gratifying, it often creates dependency, stifles team growth, and leads to burnout.

Here are a few insights from my experience with this paradox:

I once stepped into a project mid-crisis, and my instinct was to jump in and fix every issue personally.

While this got things back on track quickly, my team soon became reliant on me to solve even the smallest challenges.

The result?

A team is hesitant to make decisions without me, ultimately slowing us down. I learned that being the fixer doesn’t empower…it enables dependence.

In another scenario, I was so focused on ensuring everything was perfect that every task had to pass through me.

Sound familiar?

This created a bottleneck, delaying progress and frustrating my team. Being the hero meant I was unintentionally stalling our success.

What I needed to do was delegate responsibility and trust my team to execute so it can free us all up to be more effective.

My learnings:

I’ve felt the burnout that comes from trying to do it all. Late nights, endless meetings, and constant problem-solving left me drained and less effective. Being the fixer, causing bottlenecks and burnout are NOT where you need to be.

Besides, leadership isn’t about doing everything…it’s about guiding others to do their best work. We need to shift from being the superhero to being the coach and to empower others to become their own heroes.

Hang up your capes and build teams that thrive.
