WHAT IS EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP?

What is Effective Leadership?

Over the past few years, working across multiple

#fractional roles, I’ve come across both highly effective and highly ineffective leaders at all levels in the org.

To help those I’ve guided, I put together this short list of what it means to be an effective leader. I hope it helps you and your team, too.

There are 10 key principles that we focused on:

1️⃣ Keep learning
  • Find a mentor and follow leaders you aspire to be.
  • Ones who have the t-shirt, have made the mistakes, have had the wins, and are open to sharing and giving back.

2️⃣ Have a vision
  • You need to know what you want and where you are going.
  • Be driven to succeed, be passionate about your cause, and be great at communicating.

3️⃣ Be a servant leader
  • Your team comes first.
  • Help them to be better and lead better lives, be empathetic, be an active listener, and empower them to excel.

4️⃣ Be open to change
  • Your job is not to please everyone.
  • But it is to be flexible, have a willingness to listen, be open to input from all levels, and not always be the smartest in the room.

5️⃣ Take responsibility
  • The buck stops with you…
  • You’re responsible for everything that happens under you! No exceptions!

6️⃣ Be on top of your numbers
  • Seems obvious, somehow mostly not implemented in full.
  • Don’t forget about….
  • Financial numbers – weekly, monthly, quarterly, annual.
  • Operational numbers for day-to-day performance.
  • Industry numbers for current and YoY trends.

7️⃣ Commit to be better
  • It’s those iterative improvements you keep demanding from everyone around you.
  • You aren’t excluded. Keep finding ways to be better, do better, live better.

8️⃣ Develop emotional intelligence
  • Leadership isn’t just about strategy…it’s about people.
  • Recognise and manage your own emotions and learn to read the room and respond appropriately.

9️⃣ Be resilient
  • Challenges will come. Setbacks will happen.
  • Stay calm under pressure and push forward, learn from failure rather than dwell on it, and keep going, even when things get tough.

🔟 Shape the culture
  • The best leaders don’t just manage a team; they build a culture.
  • Set the tone through actions, not just words, and create an environment where people thrive and where people understand the values and live by them.

Lastly, Effective leadership is inspiring, adaptable guidance that fosters collaboration, achieves goals, and empowers individuals to excel collectively.
